Virgin Money Low Rate travel insurance: what cover do you actually get?

Our Verdict · Travel Insurance
Our take on travel insurance for the Virgin Money Low Rate
Cheap to hold. Uninsured the moment you fly. The Virgin Money Low Rate travel insurance that some cardholders assume is bundled here simply does not exist. Picture a hospital admission in Bali where the front desk wants a payment guarantee before treatment: that cost is yours. Most people expect any Virgin Money card to carry the same cover as the Velocity High Flyer, but the Product Disclosure Statement (the official policy booklet) never lists the Low Rate at all. Medicare pays nothing outside Australia, and a serious overseas hospital stay runs $50,000 to $200,000. A standalone travel policy covers that same night in Bali from a few dollars a day, with no card to activate first. If this card stays home for everyday spending, the gap costs you nothing; the day you book an overseas trip, you are on your own until you buy cover yourself.
- Nothing to activate: there is no prepaid-travel spend threshold to meet, because no travel policy is attached to this card
- No age limit and no per-trip duration cap to catch you out, since there is no travel cover to age out of
- The position is unambiguous: the booklet never lists the Low Rate, so there is no fine print to misread
- No overseas emergency medical: hospital, treatment and evacuation costs are entirely yours, and Medicare does not apply outside Australia
- No trip cancellation: prepaid flights, hotels and tours are unrecoverable through this card if you cancel
- No luggage, delay or missed-connection cover: every disruption expense on an overseas trip is out of pocket
- No personal liability cover overseas: a third-party injury or property damage claim is uninsured
- No domestic interstate cover: there is no Virgin Money travel policy on this tier at all
Every score is derived from official bank documents: terms and conditions, benefit guides, and claim procedures. No commercial relationship influences our ratings.

One of the cheapest rates around
Super low interest rates. If you want a cheap card you can't get much better than this. One of the cheapest rates around I think.
Torsten Ø. (ProductReview)
Worst customer service, times ten
Simply the worst. I wish I had never cancelled my Amex and gone with this company.
Kington (ProductReview)
Poor customer service and hidden fees
I did a balance transfer and didn't read the small print. Ended up paying 20% fee's on all purchases on the card.

How claims work on the Low Rate
Step 1: Check what cover you actually hold before you look for a claim line
The Low Rate has no complimentary travel, rental excess, purchase or warranty insurance, so there is no policy to claim on. Do not expect a payout for an overseas medical bill, a cancelled trip, a hire-car excess or a damaged purchase. If you need any of these covered, you have to arrange a standalone policy separately, ideally before you travel or buy.
Step 2: For a lost or stolen card, or a disputed transaction, call Virgin Money
Call Virgin Money on 13 37 39 within Australia, 8.00am to 8.00pm Monday to Friday and 9.00am to 5.00pm Saturday AEST, or +61 2 8288 2222 from overseas. You can also freeze the card and order a replacement in the Virgin Money app. For a disputed or fraudulent transaction, raise a chargeback with Virgin Money, since the card issuer, not an insurer, handles that.
Step 3: For travel, rental or purchase cover, claim on your standalone policy
Any travel medical, cancellation, luggage, rental excess or purchase claim goes to whatever standalone insurer you bought cover from, not to Virgin Money or NAB. Keep receipts, police reports for theft, and itemised accounts for medical costs, and lodge within that policy's deadline. Buy the cover when you book a trip or make a major purchase, so it is in force when something goes wrong.
What people ask about the Virgin Money Low Rate
- There is nothing to activate, because the Virgin Money Low Rate does not include complimentary travel insurance. The Virgin Money Credit Cards Complimentary Insurance Policy Information Booklet, effective 15 May 2026, does not list this card under any cover. International Travel Insurance, Domestic Travel Insurance and Rental Vehicle Excess Insurance are limited to the Velocity High Flyer Card, and Purchase Protection and Extended Warranty go to the High Flyer and Velocity Flyer only. Charging your flights to the Low Rate will not switch on any cover, no matter how much you spend. For an overseas trip, arrange a standalone travel insurance policy before you leave.
- No one, because the Low Rate carries no complimentary insurance. There is no travel, rental excess, purchase or warranty cover on this card, so there is no covered-persons definition, no spouse or dependant cover, and no additional-cardholder benefit. The booklet's eligibility rules for cardholders, partners and dependent children all attach to the Velocity High Flyer and Velocity Flyer tiers, not this one. If you need cover for yourself or your family on a trip, it has to come from a separate policy. A standalone travel insurance policy can cover a couple or a family under one plan.
- It does not, because the Low Rate has no rental vehicle excess cover. Rental excess cover reimburses the excess, the amount a hire company makes you pay towards damage or theft, rather than repairing the vehicle, and this card offers neither overseas nor Australian excess cover. The booklet places Rental Vehicle Excess Insurance on the Velocity High Flyer Card only, where it pays the agreement excess up to $10,000 for the rental period with a $100 excess per claim. On the Low Rate, a damaged hire car leaves the full agreement excess with you, commonly $2,000 to $5,500. Take the hire company's excess-reduction product or buy a standalone rental excess policy.
- There is no complimentary insurance on the Low Rate, so there is no insurer to lodge a claim with. For a lost or stolen card, or a disputed or fraudulent transaction, call Virgin Money on 13 37 39 within Australia, 8.00am to 8.00pm Monday to Friday and 9.00am to 5.00pm Saturday AEST, or +61 2 8288 2222 from overseas. Virgin Money credit cards are issued by NAB, and the card issuer handles chargebacks, not an insurer. Any travel, rental excess or purchase claim goes to whatever standalone policy you bought separately, so keep your receipts and lodge within that policy's deadline.
- Everything on the insurance side. There is no overseas emergency medical cover, no evacuation, no trip cancellation, no luggage or delay cover, and no domestic interstate cover. There is also no rental vehicle excess cover, no roadside assistance, no purchase protection, no extended warranty and no mobile phone insurance. The card is a low-interest Visa positioned on its 12.99% purchase rate and up to 55 days interest free, not on benefits. Treat any travel, hire-car or new-purchase risk as uninsured unless you arrange separate cover, and factor the $99 annual fee against a card that carries no complimentary insurance at all.
- It is not enough on its own, and you need a separate travel policy. The Low Rate carries no international or domestic travel insurance, so an overseas medical bill, a cancelled trip or delayed luggage sits entirely with you. Medicare does not cover treatment outside Australia, a serious hospital admission overseas can run $50,000 to $200,000, and an air ambulance home from Southeast Asia adds $60,000 to $100,000. Standalone travel insurance covers those scenarios with no spend threshold to activate and no dependence on which card paid for the trip. Buy the policy when you book, so cancellation cover applies to money you have already committed.
- No. The Virgin Money Low Rate has no mobile phone insurance, and no purchase protection to fall back on either, unlike the Velocity Flyer and High Flyer where a new handset is a covered item for 90 days. On the Low Rate, a cracked screen or a stolen phone is entirely your cost, and a flagship screen repair runs $200 to $600 while a replacement handset can be well over $1,000. The booklet contains no standalone phone or screen benefit on any tier. If phone cover matters to you, look at a dedicated device insurance policy or a card tier that includes purchase protection.
- No, because the Low Rate has no travel insurance of any kind, so there is nothing to extend to snow sports. On-piste skiing, meaning skiing on marked open runs, and off-piste skiing are equally uncovered here, along with medical treatment, evacuation off a mountain and damage to your gear. That matters most on an overseas ski trip, where a helicopter evacuation and surgery can reach six figures and Medicare does not apply. For a domestic snow trip Medicare covers your treatment in Australia, but transport off the mountain and unused lift passes are still yours. A standalone travel policy with a snow-sports section is the only route to cover, and most still exclude off-piste.
- Yes, but only the top tier, not the Low Rate. The Virgin Money booklet gives International and Domestic Travel Insurance, plus Rental Vehicle Excess Insurance in Australia, to the Velocity High Flyer Card only. The Velocity Flyer carries Purchase Protection and Extended Warranty but no travel cover, and the Low Rate, Anytime Rewards and No Annual Fee cards carry no complimentary insurance at all. So Virgin credit card travel insurance exists, but it is tied to the High Flyer's higher annual fee and its activation rules, such as charging at least $500 of prepaid travel to the card. If you hold the Low Rate, you need a standalone travel policy for any overseas trip.
