Our take on travel insurance for the DBS yuu Card

Pauline Laurore
Expert review · Pauline LauroreAuthor of HelloSafe's card insurance reviews

Charge a flight to the DBS yuu Card and nothing switches on, because this is a cashback card with no complimentary travel insurance at all. It never carried travel cover, so there is no certificate to activate and no assistance line to call. The DBS yuu Card benefits sit in cash rebates on everyday spending, not in protection for a trip. That matters most in a hospital: a serious overseas admission can pass S$100,000, and MediShield Life pays nothing outside Singapore, so the full bill lands on you. Trip cancellation, delays and lost bags are on you too. A standalone Singapore travel policy starts at around S$20 for a single trip and pays the medical, cancellation and baggage costs this card leaves out.

Where travel breaks down
  • No complimentary travel insurance: charging a flight to the card activates nothing
  • No overseas medical cover, so a hospital bill abroad is fully out of pocket
  • No trip cancellation, baggage or travel delay benefit of any kind

How to contact DBS yuu Card assistance?

This card carries no complimentary travel insurance, so there is no underwriter or 24-hour assistance hotline attached to it. For medical, cancellation and baggage cover overseas, buy a standalone Singapore travel policy and keep its emergency assistance number with you while you travel.

What to do if you need travel cover with the DBS yuu Card

1

Step 1: Buy a standalone travel policy before you fly

Because the card includes no travel insurance, arrange a standalone Singapore travel policy that states its overseas medical, cancellation and baggage limits in writing. Cover starts from around S$20 for a single trip.

2

Step 2: Keep your policy and emergency number with you

Save your travel insurer's 24-hour emergency assistance number and policy number on your phone, and keep receipts, medical reports and any police or airline reports to support a claim.

3

Step 3: Escalate to FIDReC for a card-issuer dispute

For a dispute with the card issuer itself, not travel insurance, you can approach FIDReC, the Financial Industry Disputes Resolution Centre, free of charge within 6 months of the issuer's final reply.

FAQ

What people ask about the DBS yuu Card

  • No. The DBS yuu Card is a cashback and lifestyle card, and it has never included complimentary travel insurance. Charging your flights or hotels to it activates nothing, because there is no travel certificate attached to the card and no insurer administering a claim. This is different from some Singapore cards that bundle a travel accident or evacuation benefit when you pay the air fare with the card. With the yuu Card, that benefit simply does not exist. If you want medical, cancellation and baggage cover for a trip, you buy a standalone travel insurance policy separately, since the card will not provide it on its own.
  • Very little that helps on a trip. The DBS yuu Card focuses on cash rebates for everyday spending such as groceries, transport and dining, rather than travel benefits. It carries no overseas medical cover, no emergency evacuation, no trip cancellation, no baggage protection and no travel delay benefit. There is also no personal accident cover tied to the card. In practice, the card is a payment and rewards tool while you travel, not a safety net if something goes wrong. For any real travel protection, you pair the card with a standalone Singapore travel policy that pays hospital bills, cancellations and lost baggage.
  • Yes, almost certainly. Because the DBS yuu Card includes no travel insurance of any kind, you start every trip with zero cover from the card itself. A single overseas hospital admission can pass S$100,000, and MediShield Life does not pay for treatment outside Singapore, so without a policy that cost falls entirely on you. A standalone Singapore travel policy fills the gap from around S$20 for a single trip, covering overseas medical treatment, emergency evacuation, trip cancellation and lost baggage. Most policies now include COVID-19 medical cover as well. Treat separate travel insurance as essential with this card, not optional.
  • No. The DBS yuu Card has no travel insurance at all, so it cannot cover COVID-19 medical costs, quarantine expenses or a trip cancelled because you caught the virus. There is no certificate to activate and no medical benefit to claim against. If you fall ill overseas, the hospital bill is your responsibility, and MediShield Life does not pay for treatment outside Singapore. Many standalone Singapore travel policies now include COVID-19 overseas medical treatment and, in some cases, trip cancellation linked to a positive test. If COVID cover matters for your trip, you need a separate travel insurance policy, because the card provides none.
  • No. The DBS yuu Card does not include mobile phone insurance, and it carries no purchase protection or extended warranty either. If your phone screen cracks or the handset is stolen, the repair or replacement is entirely your cost, and a flagship replacement runs roughly S$1,200 to S$2,300. Mobile phone cover is uncommon on Singapore credit cards in general, and this card does not offer it. For device protection, you would need a separate gadget or mobile insurance policy, or a telco protection plan. The card's value sits in its cashback on everyday spending, not in protecting the things you buy with it.
  • On its own, no. The DBS yuu Card is fine for paying and earning cashback while you travel, but it provides no travel insurance, so it leaves you exposed to the costs that matter most abroad. An overseas hospital stay, an emergency flight home, a cancelled trip or lost luggage would all be your own cost with only the card in your wallet. To travel with real protection, pair the card with a standalone Singapore travel policy, which covers overseas medical treatment, evacuation, cancellation and baggage from around S$20 a trip. Use the card for spending and the policy for protection.
